Problem: My air conditioning unit blows the circuit breaker after it runs for a while. What could be the problem?

Problem: My air conditioning unit blows the circuit breaker after it runs for a while. What could be the problem? Would a super-boost compressor hard start booster help?

  1. Answer: I have seen this problem many times when I was doing AC, Heat Pump service work.  I would suggest that you check to see if the outside of your breaker is getting warm after the unit runs for a while (20 minutes or more). If the breaker is warm on the outside, it is a good sign that the breaker could be arcing inside the breaker and causing the breaker to trip after a while. If the breaker is arcing on the inside you will need a new breaker. A loose wire attached to the breaker or any loose high voltage wires in the breaker box or unit can cause the breaker to trip. Please make sure the power is turned off before testing the tightness of the wires.
  2. Another problem that could cause a breaker to trip would be a tight compressor. A compressor that will not start right away. A compressor that is having a hard time starting draws lots of amps and can cause a breaker to trip. We sell the SPP6 compressor hard start booster to hopefully eliminate this problem.   3. Please make sure that your air conditioner run capacitors are all in good shape and not weak. This could also be a tight compressor and if this is the problem then, yes, the super boost could possibly help.   5. Please make sure your unit is charged up properly by feeling the larger copper pipe (suction line) while the unit is running. I have been using this feel method for many years when I was doing service work to quickly check an air conditioner or heat pump system’s charge. When using this method you will need to get your fingers (two fingers and thumb) on the copper line underneath the insulation. The unit should have been running for at least 15 minutes or more in order to use this feel method for testing an air conditioner system’s charge. Your indoor house temperature should be below 80 degrees to use this method. The copper line should feel like a cold coke can right out of the refrigerator if the unit is charged properly. If it doesn’t feel real cold then you are probably low on charge. Being low on charge will burn a compressor up faster than anything. If you have any other questions please feel free to email us.
