Choose an evaporative type humidifier, not one that creates tiny water droplets. Evaporative humidifiers do not emit bacteria or mold and do not contribute to airborne particulate levels in homes.
If you use a portable humidifier, clean the reservoir regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions to prevent possible mold or bacterial growth.
If you use a furnace-mounted humidifier, look for one with a flow-through drain that eliminates the reservoir altogether.
Make sure your humidifier has an accurate control system. Too much humidity can create condensation on cold windows and encourage the growth of dust mites; too little humidity is not only uncomfortable, but causes damage to your home and furnishings.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends maintaining indoor relative humidity between 30 and 50 percent |

1/4" copper water supply tubing at least 10'.
Plumber's Teflon tape to wrap around the threads of the water saddle valve before you screw it into the body of the saddle valve. This will prevent a leak around where the valve screws into the body.
18 gauge thermostat wire. Probably about 20'. This is supplied with the humidifier by us free. It is better to have too much than not enough. You will use this to wire between your humidistat, low voltage transformer and back to the humidifier.
Electrical-(1) outlet box with romex connectors.
#14-3 house wire. You probably will not need over 3'. I use the 14-3, sometimes to run from the furnace board (when 110 volts are provided on the furnace board) over to an outlet that is attached to the side of the furnace. You can also use the wire to run into a junction box that powers the low voltage transformer when installing the model 500 & 600 humidifiers. You must drill a hole in the blower compartment of the furnace and use a romex connector to protect the wire from being cut by the body of the furnace. I use a metal cutting hole saw to drill the hole in the body of the furnace.
3/4 PVC fittings & PVC cement: You will probably need at least 4-90's, 2-couplings and 1-tee. |
